Cloak of Deception (May 29, 2001)

A boring book that describes Palpatine's pulling of the strings to bring down Chancellor Valorum. Much time is devoted to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan investigating and fighting the Nebula Front and Captain Kohl. The Nebula front is a terrorist organization with aims to bring down the Trade Federation.

Star Wars: Darth Plagueis (January 10, 2012)

The compelling back story of the most powerful Sith Lord (here primarily as a scheming apprentice) in the Star Wars universe and chronology is brought to life much more effectively than Luceno's previous effort dealing with similar subjects sans Darth Plagueis. The characterization of Plagueis and his manipulations in secret are fascinating.  Then, to find out how Darth Sidious stole it from right underneath him illustrated the cunning of the dark side. The book also covered part of the coming of Darth Maul, who later dies..or does he?

Darth Bane: Path of Destruction (September 26, 2006)

Darth Bane's journey from a miner with a chip on his shoulder to the restorer of the rule of two and ascension as the premier Sith Lord in the Star Wars galaxy is told masterfully by Old Republic era staple author Drew  K. While many of the details got somewhat tiresome, it remained a good back story to the rise of the evil and sinister plans begun by the rule of two Sith approximately 1,000 years before the battle of Yavin. Bane's background is that of the abused working class, so he immediately gained my sympathy. The remainder of his rise to power was interesting.

Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith (May 5, 2005)

This tells the story of Ulic's fall to the darkside of the Force.

Tales of the Jedi

While I like tales of the Star Wars universe, as there are no characters relevant to the film franchise, the stories get a little dry. Though it is neat to hear about some of the early Jedi and their struggle against the Sith. The Jedi Order in those days was not as puritanical regarding attachment (likely because Lucas had not weighed in on his creed that Jedi were virtually all celibate as this production predates the prequel films). Ulic Qel-Droma essentially plays the fallen Jedi archetype similar to Anakin Skywalker. Tott Doneeta is one of his faithful Jedi sidekicks along with his younger brother Cay Qel-Droma. Nomi Sunrider is the sexy love interest of Ulic. She is also strong with the force.
