The compelling back story of the most powerful Sith Lord (here primarily as a scheming apprentice) in the Star Wars universe and chronology is brought to life much more effectively than Luceno's previous effort dealing with similar subjects sans Darth Plagueis. The characterization of Plagueis and his manipulations in secret are fascinating. Then, to find out how Darth Sidious stole it from right underneath him illustrated the cunning of the dark side. The book also covered part of the coming of Darth Maul, who later dies..or does he?
